DPS (Mihan) team wins recognition at CERN for innovation project

Published June 16, 2026

NAGPUR: Five students from DPS (Mihan), forming the team Nanostormers, have won the Synergy Award at the school level for the Bose Beam Line Challenge-2025 organised by LifeLab Foundation. The team also secured fourth place in South Asia and second place in India overall among 37 participating teams. As a prize, the team visited CERN Labs in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 7 to 13, 2026.

The project presented by team members Swetika S., Uddesh Gadge, Varad Sane, Rayan Konde and Jaskirat Bagga is titled Deep-tissue NIR-activated microrobots for biomedical intervention. The proposal considers the use of gold nanorods, responsive hydrogels and tunable NIR beamline actuation for potential biomedical tasks such as targeted drug delivery and removing blockages.

During their visit to CERN, the students learned about the institution's research from Phillips Mathew, visited the synchrotron facility to understand particle accelerators, toured the ATLAS Visitor Centre where the discovery of the Higgs boson took place, and learned the role of data science and computing in modern nuclear physics. They participated in a practical lab session where they built their own cloud chambers and directly observed ionisation tracks formed by particles such as alpha particles, muons and electrons.

School President and Pro-Vice Chairperson Tulika Kedia and Director Savita Jaiswal noted the students' achievement. Principal Nidhi Yadav said the students have turned a scientific idea into reality and demonstrated the school's work in innovation-based learning and connecting students to the global scientific ecosystem.
